Following an old Indigenous trail at the foot of the escarpment, Davenport is among Toronto’s oldest roads, in use long before the city existed. By the 1800s, orchards and gardens welcomed travelers on horseback. Toronto commuters have always been a thing.

In the 1860s, John Greenwood ran a tavern at Queen and Greenwood. When he was accused of running a “disorderly house” for selling liquor on Sundays, he responded by renaming it The Puritan and hanging a sign of a cat in a noose. Subtlety was not exactly his strong point.

Named in the early 1800s after British statesman Arthur Wellesley, the street became shorthand for “Toronto the Good.” Churches, government buildings, and institutions. Polite. Orderly. Respectable. Restraint was once the city’s personality. Toronto has… evolved.
